Posted by tom | Jan 15, 2006By 1877, there was enough evangelical activity that students from across Cambridge's 17 colleges organized the Cambridge Inter-Collegiate Christian Union (CICCU), which focused on evangelism and encouraged students to pursue missionary careers. CICCU president J. E .K. Studd invited D. L. Moody and Ira Sankey to Cambridge in 1882. Studd's father had earlier professed faith in Christ during a Moody visit to London.
Ever asked where your organization came from? Well, here's a brief history of the roots of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship from a recent Christianity Today piece. Thought you might be interested (note: alum should feel free to post some any memories/stories they'd like to share). Posted by Miller Peck, Jan 15 2006, 21:13oxford OICCU ....i understand that Alistir McGrath became a christian through a CICCU bible study...he's usually considered today's leading british evangelical (following in steps of john stott and J.I Packer) ... after howard guinness brought intervarsity from england to canada in 1928, stacey woods came from canada to start a work in usa in 1938 ... i heard stacey woods often at urbana, and at harvard (he spoke one weekend for ivcf at marblehead ... on subject of finding God's vocational will he said there's too much fuss on that: "it's often a matter of going up this tree to pick coconuts or this other tree to pick coconuts" ... you can be fruitful in
