Eden's words

Posted by tom | Feb 5, 2007

As a proud Father, I wanted to post Eden's developing words, i.e., what has gone beyond mama and dada. Our every-other-week house visit speech therapist has been a great encouragement to us as we (and our extended family) seek to teach communication skills to Eden, remember when she started about 1 month ago?

Eden needs to increase her sound repertoire to include sounds other than m, d, g, k and to articulate these sounds with clarity. Three particularly special pieces are

1. Deedee (Eden, how she refers to herself) can be found in the living room with her baby doll saying Ah deedee (ah, baby . . . sometimes sounds more like ah, dayday), singing Ah, la, dee, and feeding her baby a gah (bottle).
2. Watching Deedee pulling up to and using Ack-ah (the walker) in the living room to get around.
3. Her improvement in imitating sounds, particularly songs such as trying Happy Birthday for Eyen and Hiyah.

Other words, and context does matter with regard to meaning, include:

da [yes, also hat when combined with kee (coat). She doesn't want to go out of the house to the cah (car) without the hat.]
dinky [stinky, referring to diaper change and deedee (peepee, note this can also be TV when in the finger is poined at the screen)]
ga [dog, she loved Got's (Scott, Theresa's brother) dog, and also seems to have affections for Hayley's world of Hello Kitty, whom she calls gigi. But the only live pet we have in the house is gah (vacuum) which she love to follow/hug]
ga (ball, when she has a ball; music when she's entering her room to play or go to bed; telephone when she's pointing to one. Note: she loves to play with any type of phone so watch out when you visit as she'll mess with your cell phone settings)
GaGa (Grandma, Grandpa)
g(k)a (sock, which she pulls off all the time, after she's taken her dee, i.e., shoe, off)
guh (cup)
ha (hot, loves to point to the oven and declare this truth. Sometimes may be ah)
mo [moo, her first and most pronounced animal sound. At first covering all animals. Now we have via the John Deere animal tractor set and the Curious George book series added guh for duck and ah-yah (a horse's neigh or an elephant)]
more [more -- related to food, she eats and drinks a lot. acka, (cracker), keekee (cookie), milk, tee (cheese), yahyah (apple) are favorites to ask for directly and she says dadu (thank-you) when she receives her request. Meal time desires also include frequent calls of dgee-dgee (sticky) as Eden likes to have her hands washed/cleaned again and again or for a dee (spoon) when it isn't on the tray.]

Way to go, Eden! I love the syllables they come up with when learning words. So cute.
