Grandmother Grosh passes on
Posted by tom | Nov 22, 2007
Yesterday evening my grandmother, Eleanor Grosh (born in 1919), moved from this life to the next. After sharing the news with Ellen and Hayley, we spent some time grieving . . . only relieved by the joy of having my sister Amanda, who has been out of town for 2 months, swing by to spend time with us.
My Grandmother was a strong, educated woman with a passion for the arts and the ability to strike up a conversation with whomever she came across on her various AmTrak runs between Lancaster, PA and New York City. She faced a number of difficult circumstances with courage and determination. She grew up in NYC, helping in the family hardware store. She faced the Depression and various subsequent family trials. With my Grandfather, who she met while they were both pursuing graduate education at Columbia University in NYC, she raised three smart, energetic kids. As an adult she cared for her own mother in her later years and grieved through the tragic death of her husband in a car accident in 1978. In her twilight years she found joy and companionship once again in Leonard, her second husband, whom she met on one of her many train trips. Embodying courage, independence, and determination, she passed these values along to her 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. May we share these gifts of her legacy with gratitude, never forgetting to offer them to God first in order for them to be a blessing to others.

Note: More photos and reflections coming over the course of the next several days, weeks. The above photo is a childhood memory of her playing the piano, something which I had the opportunity to enjoy many times. On this occassion, she was visiting at my house and the piano was in my room. A special treat! If family and friends have something they'd like to share on the site, let me know.
