Too many opportunities
Posted by tom | Mar 22, 2008Thank-you to my campus ministry friend who passed along Findings: The Advantages of Closing a Few Doors. Here's a quote from the article regarding a study at MIT,
Closing a door on an option is experienced as a loss, and people are willing to pay a price to avoid the emotion of loss,” Dr. Ariely says. In the experiment, the price was easy to measure in lost cash. In life, the costs are less obvious — wasted time, missed opportunities. If you are afraid to drop any project at the office, you pay for it at home.
“We may work more hours at our jobs,” Dr. Ariely writes in his book, “without realizing that the childhood of our sons and daughters is slipping away. Sometimes these doors close too slowly for us to see them vanishing.”
I agree with my friend's comment: I found this quite helpful and, admittedly, accurate. “Keeping one’s options always open” is the plague, I think, of our contemporary culture! Some good wisdom here.
Brief book plug: I've found Freedom from the Tyranny of the Urgent helpful with regard to proper use of time. Check it out.
