Literacy Debate: Online, R U Really Reading?
Posted by tom | Jul 29, 2008After a weekend at the cabin (pics coming shortly), I returned to a lot of webmail. Among the NY Times daily news feeds, I found Literacy Debate: Online, R U Really Reading? How ironic to read the piece on-line and to share it with you in this manner!
Back on topic: I am happy to report even with 15 at the cabin and the TV on for stretches of time, our family of six visited the Eagles Mere Bookstore (BTW, I loved the improvements since our last visit), selected some books despite Eden's shelf-clearing movement, and spent time reading along the way (I only finished E.J. Swalm's Non-resistance Under Test, whereas Eden finished book after book).
I wish the article would have explored the value of reading as a family, not in isolation in the same room, but out loud as part of an on-going conversation, e.g., daily breakfast or dinner devotionals which involve reading and preparing for/debriefing the day. Related, how about reading groups processing material together, e.g., last summer Elizabethtown Brethren-in-Christ read Philip Yancy's Prayer: Does it make a difference, and discussed the book in fellowship groups, and prayed for one-another. The Word became flesh and there is more of a basis to learning than just reading ... how about processing and properly applying in the larger context of the creation? Just some brief thoughts, gotta go as Eden's taking the keyboard. Anyone have more to add? I'll try to finish mine later, after I run some errands.
