Prayer is the light of the spirit
Posted by tom | Mar 31, 2009Through the wisdom of our local congregation's Pastor of Adult Discipleship, I've taken a break from teaching an adult elective this term. I'm not sure how/why, but much has come together over the course of the past several weeks on campus and in the home. As such, I have benefited greatly from the time of rest and restoration which I've received through participating in an adult elective on Spiritual Formation. On Sunday, the instructor shared with us a number of resources.
Today join me in dwelling upon one of those pieces: Prayer is the light of the Spirit from a homily by John Chrysostom, 5th century.*
Prayer and converse with God is a supreme good: it is partnership and union with God. As the eyes of the body are enlightened when they see light, so our spirit when it is intent on God, is illumined by his infinite light. I do not mean the prayer of outward observance but prayer from the heart, not confined to fixed times or periods but continuous throughout the day and night.
